Yes, that's the correct way to do it.

1.) Change or set the MySQL "root" password in "Network 
Services" / "MySQL" / "MySQL Server" / "Change Password" first.

2.) Go back to the "Server" tab and see that you can now connect. No need to 
enter anything there. UNLESS you changed the password through other means 
than the BlueOnyx GUI.
