Here is my 2 cents, and it is based off our having over 200 BlueQuartz
servers in production in our datacenter - comprised of our own
webhosting network, dedicated servers, and customer-owned colocated
equipment.
We are working towards a migration to BlueOnyx.
Obviously, it won't happen overnight.
Like many of you, I was also disappointed to see Brian call it quits,
and so suddenly. Certainly, I wish him the best and I understand that
sometimes the needs of others don't always coincide directly with the
best interests of my business! ;) We also have purchased many of the
Nuonce packages over the years.
Now, looking to the future, my staff and I have had a good deal of
discussion on this. We feel that BlueQuartz will probably be around
for a good long time. I do not think that it will disappear. However,
we have felt for some time that it has been withering on the vine. The
most prolific contributor to the project has been Michael Stauber of
Solarspeed. His contributions to the BlueQuartz codebase over the
course of the past 2 years has unfortunately been largely ignored or
pushed back by the maintainers. I do not say that with malice or to be
accusatory. It's just the case.
Having worked extensively with Michael in the past, knowing him by
reputation back in the Cobalt days, and also knowing that many of our
customers enjoy his services for systems that they host with us I have
absolutely no hesitation in recommending Solarspeed.
One important difference that I should point out is that Brian (as noted
in his good-bye message) operated Nuonce in his spare time. Solarspeed
is a full-time operation. I'll let Michael speak to that if he chooses.
From a practicality standpoint, we are moving to BlueOnyx for 3 big
reasons:
1) CentOS 5
2) single-CD installer image that is updated and maintained.
3) growing community of developers, lead by Solarspeed.
