Hi guys
not sure what was happening but i deleted my sites and then re created them 
and they are perfect now :)
The tarball install eventually went very easily on my RaQ 550 after i did a 
factory fresh install.
I installed the basic strongbolt1 (without BlueQuartz) and then did an 
upgrade to CentOS 4.8 after that i did a an upgrade to CentOS 5 .4
I made notes of exactly what was needed so if anyone else is interested feel 
free to contact me
