Chris,

is index.php  a symlink to ----> typo3_src/index.php
and typo3_src linked to typo3_src-x.x.x ??

Check links and file permissions.

Options +FollowSymLinks +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch must be in vhosts .include

Thanks, Uwe.   All done, but still no joy.
I appreciate the suggestions, though.  Here are the errors I'm getting:
