Let's perhaps back up a moment just to be sure.   Have you set up a test 
user on the domain, enabled a vacation reply, then tested as you watch 
the maillog?  Does that give you any clues?

I generally discourage my users from making use of the vacation reply, 
but I understand that some are just going to feel it's necessary.
