You can try pve.proxmox.com it virtualizes Windows an Linux on the same
machine.

Works fine on 2008 servers, and can run BO boxes side by side, backup system
is automatic, and clistering is easy

And its free

Hy Colin!

I´m using Xenserver (the free one) to virtualise both (Linux and Windows).
I have´d used VmWare Esxi 4.x before (also free), but Xen is more
comfortable and
have a few features more for me.
Both are running stable, but you are right: VmWare is heavy expensive if
you
are buying the license - xenserver´s pricing is ok I think.
Both free solutions don´t have backup integrated.
I think the performance from Vmware is with windows better than xen, but
I don´t have tests.
If you have questions write me a mail
Joachim
