Hi Michael,
the reason I mentioned it was because I was getting errors in the maillog
like:
Jul 19 00:35:10 localhost dovecot: imap(ernie): Error: user ernie: Initialization failed: mail_location not set and autodetection failed: Mail storage autodetection failed with home=/home/.users/38/ernie

Until such time that I added mail_location = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=mbox
to the new /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-mail.conf config file.
