It's clearly not an issue with sendmail then. If it is not a DNS error,
and you receive no errors starting sendmail (I'm not 100% familiar with
sendmail errors these days but if it can open a socket then it should be
fine) I would assume it has to do with your Apache/PHP build/config.
Then again, assumption is for the ignorant.
