Thanks Michael,

That did the trick after a while.  For some reason I got a strange 
looping behavior in Firefox: the status message said connecting then 
waiting and repeated several times / second until I hit stop.  I gave up 
on it after logging in and out and restarting firefox and this morning 
when I logged in it just worked.  I hate that sort of stuff.  I feel 
like I had a chance to learn something and missed out but I am glad it 
is working.

I am using firefox 5 on ubuntu 11 fwiw.
