Adding

foreach $key (keys(%ENV))
{
    printf("%-10.10s: $ENV{$key}\n", $key);
}

To the start produces:

HOME      : /root
LOGNAME   : root
SHLVL     : 1
_         : /usr/sbin/swatch
PATH      : /usr/bin:/bin
SHELL     : /bin/sh
PWD       : /root
USER      : root

So it looks like it's not getting the environment. Will try doing stuff...
