I think the reason you are getting this is because your MySQL 
credentials are not set correctly in the GUI.

Make sure that you go to Server Management > Network Services> MySQL and 
in the MySQL Connection Status you see "MySQL connection possible with 
this settings."  If you see it is NOT possible, then set the password in 
the Change Password box.  You have to be able to have a connection there 
if you want phpMyAdmin to work.
