Thanks Michael... I was looking at Steffan's script as your mail arrived... 
good timing :o)

I don't know if it's related by the authentication, when set to public and 
protected, presents the error 500 page.  The following is in 
/var/log/httpd/error_log:

Unknown Authn provider: external

Any ideas would be welcome.
