[BlueOnyx:09828] PAM problem on 5106R?

We have a customer server that is exhibiting a strange behavior. It
will allow SSH as admin, but will not allow su - to obtain root. We get
a permission denied.

We can get in as root if the appropriate option is ticked in the BX GUI.
  It's not a password problem.

I have even tried SSH as root, su admin, then su - again and the same
problem occurs.

We show these entries in /var/log/secure:
--------------
Mar 19 16:19:11 dedicated40 su[25717]: pam_unix(su-l:auth):
authentication failure; logname=root uid=500 euid=500 tty=pts/1
ruser=admin rhost=  user=root

Mar 19 16:19:11 dedicated40 pam_abl[25717]: Permission denied (13) while
opening or creating database

Mar 19 16:19:15 dedicated40 su: pam_unix(su:session): session closed for
user admin
--------------

Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?

Thanks!
