          ip_tables?

How to get it in single user mode?

Appears to be a hard drive problem,
If you have RAID1, you could swap drives so will boot off the other drive.
You can boot the system fff the Install CD. " linux rescue "

How do you know what the code and that error screen means?
This is a one drive system no raid.
        TIA

You might boot into linux rescue, look at the log files (boot.log) and messages for kernel errors
Also while in rescue mood turn iptables off in "chkconfig iptables off" , may be of some help.
    then if still in trouble,
If you are now booting a new kernel, change /boot/grub/grub.conf to boot off a known good kernel

forgot this one, hitting the space bar (any key) when boot screen displays should give you the option of booting off a different kernel
