Yeah, for that to work you need both the mcrypt RPMs and the PHP must be
compiled against mcrypt as well. Which is not the case on RHEL6 clones
such as CentOS6 or SL6.

You could get the Solarspeed.net PHP-5.3.18 for BlueOnyx, which has
working mcrypt support.
