Richard,

The hosts.deny file is not referenced by all services.  If you really 
want to block an address, use iptables.  This article describes how: 
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-iptables-drop/

Of course, if you block your own address, you'll have to log in from 
another address or from the console.
