I can't help you fix the PHP but I can suggest another direction. Roundcube.
I use the package from Compass and it is MUCH better than Squirrelmail.
There is even a plugin that will import Squirrelmail user settings
(squirrelmail_usercopy) that can be enabled by messing with the Roundcube
config a little.
