Problem solved (skip to the end if you like) but I'm putting in my 
comments to each suggestion as needed.

Yes, correct.

I have done this, several times, with no change in behaviour.

There was not previously a null hostname A record.  I have added that, 
restarted Sendmail, no effect.

Yes, I tried that as well.

Ah ha, you were very close on this one.  The customer uses godaddy.com 
for the registrar and historically they are very slow to propagate their 
updates.   Funny enough, I came back from lunch and it's working just 
fine now.

Thanks for the advice and help.   Next time I get stuck with this issue, 
I'll be sure to try an nslookup, dig, or host from the box in question 
to see what it is seeing.
