It could be that one of the disks is bad. If it for example has a bad
sector (or two or three) it might not have enough usable space left to
receive a direct carbon copy of the "good" disk.

You could check the SMART status of both disks with "scmartctl". Use
"man smartctl" to review the available options.

Usually you'd use it like this "smartctl -a /dev/sda" to check the
status of the disk /dev/sda.

Darn, has been a while since I had a real RaQ550 in front of me. For a
moment I even forgot if they used IDE or SATA disks. :p

As the RaQ550 use IDE disks and not SATA, the actual commands will be
"smartctl -a /dev/hda" and "smartctl -a /dev/hdb" for you.
