Glad I could help.

Since you activated compression just now, it will run on the next weekly
(maybe)  logrotate run.

Usually /etc/logtorate.d/syslog takes care of that.

Are you missing that configuration file?

/var/log/messages (syslog) requires specific configuration and its usually
part of the linux distro.
