[BlueOnyx:16598] Apache tweaking

It seems with WordPress sites, the server loads are higher than normal.
I have a 5108R server that becomes unresponsive due to high CPU loads
and top always shows php-cgi processes as the culprit. I restart of HTTP
resolves the issue. I have also had what seems to be attacks on a site
that kept recurring after restarts and end up having to block their IP,
found in the access logs, in the firewall to stop. Apache seems
overloaded with several PHP requests. I use suPHP as well for these
types of sites. I took one problem site that gets attacked a lot and
move it to a 5108R VPS of its own and it still have the issue regularly.
I know I have read in the past on this list some tweaks some people had
done with apache max connections or processes, etc. Can anyone share
their experience with this sort of thing?
Thanks, Robert
