Sometimes you can be standing too close to the trees to see the wood!
Woke up this morning and knew the answer ... NAT loopback. I reckon I have a typo somewhere in my firewall configs, but that will be dug out this morning. Pretty sure that is the problem.

As you said ... firewall! :)
