it seems ftps is actually working and the errors I get suggests proftpd
tries to apply TLS/SSL to normal FTP-sessions as well.

I'm going to try and set the config correctly and get back to you all.

BTW, there might be an unrelated, or not!, problem with the PHP-settings
after the update, just go into the PHP settings of the vsite and save it
again, no need to change any settings.
The problem was a blank page and the error log of apache suggested it's
an openbase_dir problem.
