I tried again from scratch and now when I do cat /proc/mdstat, I get
This:

md1 : active raid1 sda2[1]
      243188736 blocks super 1.1 [2/1] [_U]

unused devices: <none>

instead of what I had before which is this:

It appears I have partial RAID and cannot figure how to fix it.
