I noticed this problem a while back and I found a fix that I use whenever I setup a new server.

Change saslauthd to run better:

	  nano -w /etc/sysconfig/saslauthd
	  change FLAGS= to FLAGS="-n 30 -c"
	  service saslauthd restart

This increases the process threads for saslauthd and also enables caching.

I forgot to post this to the list back when I found it but it has totally solved the problems for me.
