I wonder if this investigation has sunk under other issues or whether
you've got anywhere with it? 

I don't get the sense that there have been radical(!) changes to the
configuration within the 2.2 family of Dovecot - yes, there have been
some changes in 2.3 (but even those don't seem that major...)
