Just posting this here in case someone finds the question via a search
engine and is looking for an answer:

It turned out that the server had a fairly old "NewLinQ" PKG installed.
Which didn't yet support the license mechanism that was introduced about
a year ago.

Installing the latest "NewLinQ" PKG solved this.
