In the past, Oracle, which has a huge of corporate high-paying customers
with not-so-easily tossed out installations of older Oracle/RedHat
releases (even RH4) has provided a number of updated versions of RH/Oracle
packages that (with some care) can be dropped into place.
I've not looked into this lately, but worth digging into.
I realize that lots of older stuff eventually becomes unsuportable for
lots of reasons, but having to replace something that does its job
perfectly well having to be tossed simply because of a revised
communications protocol is a shame. The little guys can't afford to
wholesale replace things on a whim, and the really big guys with really
massive numbers of deployed installs globally can't either.
