[BlueOnyx:22230] MySQL connection problem

One of my servers won't connect to MySQL using the GUI.

>From the CLI I can connect okay so I know the password is correct and that the service is running.
If I go into Network Services/MySQL and put in a connection password I get "... cannot be established".
If I try and create a database from the GUI (e.g. adding a Wordpress site using the webapp installer) it doesn't create the database.

Clues where to look please.
