Hello Chris,

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes, the smooth procedure under Ubuntu has also motivated me to address the issue again. In Ubuntu you can go from 16 to 24 with a few intermediate steps and the pain is really limited.
I really like easy migrate, but when I switch from CentOS7 to AL 8 or 9, I have to go through all the sites because the directory structure of the webroot has changed. That is time-consuming. But unavoidable. In addition, there are always small kinks, such as the fact that all domains are simply entered in the /etc/opendkim/SigningTable list during a migration, even if they do not have a dkim. Sure, if you know about it, you can fix it afterwards. But it's just not a no-brainer.

Perhaps it will be easier with easy migrate from AL 9 and BO 5211R to AL 10 and BO 5212R because the systems are closer together and the directory structure does not change. But also because everything remains the same, my approach was to ask again whether the inplace upgrade process has improved with AL in contrast to CentOS.

Best regards
Dirk

Hi Dirk!

I do not pretend to speak for Michael but will offer some limited insight from my perspective.

I have run the in-place upgrades on various operating systems. The smoothest ones tend to be Debian-based (Ubuntu has gone extremely well for me when I have done this.)   I have run Elevate on Enterprise Linux variants.  At a customer's behest, we ran Elevate to take a cPanel server from CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 8 because that was suggested by a pop-up within cPanel for them. It went terribly.   Based on the experiences that I have had, I would NEVER suggest going this route on a production server.

Even if it does go well, having to deal with the downtime for the various updates and restarts just does not seem to make a lot of sense.   And if something goes wrong on the transfer, you always have the old server to fall back on as the migration is non-destructive.   If something goes wrong in the in-place upgrade process, you may have an extended downtime while trying to recover.

Given that Easy-Migrate works as well as it does, it's probably just faster to spin up a new server and run the migration.   This is the standard practice we follow with both BlueOnyx and WHM/cPanel servers that we manage.

I certainly wouldn't say that it cannot be done.   I just question the logic of doing so.
