I was greeted with this fine nugget in my email this AM:

/etc/cron.weekly/99-raid-check:

WARNING: mismatch_cnt is not 0 on /dev/md1

I’m guessing the second of the two mirrored drives has failed. Whats the next logical step? How do I tell if its truly defective or has just fallen out of sync due to a random glitch? Heck, how can I guarantee which drive is which in order to swap for a fresh one?

Also, Active monitor shows no problems and is reporting RAID is operating normally which makes it even more curious. Do these arrays auto resync when there is a problem, or is the GUI lying?

I had an error several months back regarding the raid status, but it appeared to go away on its own. Also I get several messages per week telling me that the disk usage has returned to normal, but I never see any “problem” emails telling when it stops being normal.

Its times like this that I miss my Dells with PERC cards and hot swap backplanes that literally address the physical drives and flash appropriate blinky lights when one fails.

Believe it or not, Ive been using these servers since the Raq4 days and this is the first (apparent) drive failure Ive had. *knocks on wood*.

Your sage wisdom is greatly appreciated.
