Good question, Chris. A good way to test it in a dry run is to execute
cmuExport with the -c switch. That will just export the configuration
(i.e.: The XML files), but will not create any tarballs.
That way you can check if it now creates the XML files before you run
the full export.

Thanks Michael. Yes, using the -c a proper cmu.xml was created. It
looks like what happens is that the / filesystem goes read-only at some
point during an actual export and that is hampering results.
I may have to get "creative" with this one. :(
