Does anyone have any experience with, or recommendations on enabling the rewrite module in the Apache config?

I've got a site developer that insists the ExpressEngine requires the rewrite module enabled for his site to work correctly. I haven't found anything on-line suggesting that it would be open a security vulnerability. And I can probably figure out how to do it from the command-line.

But the lack of that option in the BlueOnyx GUI suggests that its not used much, or at all. So I'm concerned that with a little used option enabled at the command-line - Yum might change it back to default whenever there is a update. I just don't want to enable this option, and keep getting phone calls every time there is a Yum update to Apache with "uhhh, the site's not working again - can you go in and enable that option again"!

Any suggestions?
