Hi all and thanks for the reply comments.

The new release of MailScanner loaded and worked for me again.

The idea of not forcing dependencies should make upgrading easier in the
future.

Spamassassin does have huge dependencies and I have tried to load it a few
times in various ways including MCAN (is it the MCAN console???).

Well, it never worked but yum install spamassassin loaded it fine.

I noticed this weekend that a yum update did update spamassassin but a lot
depends on how often the code is updated to be delivered by YUM.

I have not yet got to the stage of ripping out my hair with mailscanner, so
far its been pretty well behaved for me.

The configuration files are easy to understand and I found a guide on there
website which helps a lot.

ClamAV is fairly easy to install so if any updates become available then at
the moment I guess my only option is to re-load it.

Freshclam keeps the virus definitions up to date so some help there.

Pyror, Razor and DCC all run without any trouble. As stated this helps with
the effectiveness of spamassassin.

We only really run our own company web and mail services on our server,
together with a few friends sites that I host for free.

I am running on a DL360 G4 server which is so much faster than our old
retired Cobalt RAQ4.

Our server only ever reaches about 17% of utilisation so I don't think that
the overheads of MailScanner etc make to much difference in my case.

If you are commercially hosting then I would imagine that it would become a
problem.

I am pushing some 12,000 bogomips which is like Christmas all over again
compared to our old Cobalt RAQ 4.

I don't have much of a clue about Milters although I know there is a section
on this in a few books I have regarding mail and spamassassin.

Could be time for another steep learning curve if that's the way to go
forward with mail watch.

Keeping the PERL versions correct can be a nightmare as stated.

Mailscanner has an option to uninstall the Perl modules it uses. You can
then CTRL+Z out of the script, yum update then FG to continue running
MailScanner.

It simply re-builds the PERL modules and away you go again, well most of the
time.

I always work out the PERL updates on an old PC I run as a server test box
which incidentally I broke over the weekend when doing the exact same thing.

I unloaded all the PERL stuff from MailScanner then during re-making them it
just completely trashed the OS where it would not load again.

So DON'T do this on a production server until you try it on a door stop
server first.

Yes, its definitely better to have some protection than none at all.

I ran our Cobalt for 2 years with no spam and virus protection at the
server, left it down to outlook on the client pc's.

The AMD processor had been upgraded but the demands on the hardware were
just to great with MailScanner and SpamAssassin running so I left it out
completely (GASP!)

We seem to suffer more from Brute Force attacks on the ftp than anything
else.

Any other suggestions as to solving the spam and virus situation?
