I think you need a better PHP install like PHP-5.2.9; it will not work with 
the regular PHP that comes pre-installed.

Also on line 86 of the   /usr/share/roundcube/config/main.inc.php you need 
to comment out the
$rcmail_config['smtp_server'] = 'localhost';

That way  "the PHP mail() function is used".
