I'm brain dead, the client's server has been in use for a year or so and
working fine. then all of a sudden email aliases stopped working, but
all else was OK.

The DNS was OK, but your response caused me to check the Email Server
Alias, which was not initialized. Now email aliases work. <pounding head
on desk>
