Since ProFTP uses the PAM authentication database, DDOS email attacks
against your email server are probably the culprit.  Look in your /var/log/
directory for files showing lots attempts to login to email and failed.
That bullocks up Dovecot. 

If you haven't installed Dfix by Compass Networks, it can help cut down on
that.
