There are a lot of reasons that method is NOT recommended and you've 
just found one of them.  I can't say for sure, but I seem to recall that 
CentOS added PHP 5.3 in the 5.6 release.  (As did the upstream).   So 
you may well be running PHP 5.3 now.  If you google a bit you'll find 
that there have been a number of problems for folks who have installed 
5.2.x from the testing repo and have subsequently yum updated to 5.6. 
(You probably DON'T want to use a repo called "TESTING" on a 
"PRODUCTION" server).

Check your RPM's and your YUM log.   Then also check to php -v and see 
what you get.   Then check to see what errors are popping up in 
/var/log/httpd/error_log.

If you're real lucky you may be able to get away with disabling php on a 
site and then re-enabling via the GUI. If you're not so lucky then... 
I'm not sure!
