I wouldn't recommend vmware tools for timekeeping.
Instead, follow VMWare recommendations:

I quote:

"Note: In all cases use NTP instead of VMware Tools periodic time synchronization."

In short, remove the local clock from /etc/ntp.conf, by commenting out the following lines:
# server        127.127.1.0     # local clock
# fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 10

And add the line:
"tinker panic 0" to the top of /etc/ntp.conf which will stop it panicking if the clock drifts a lot.

The server will now keep time just fine.
