+1 for using K9 Mail on Android. It is actually a more advanced version
of the built in Android Messaging. They forked the code and immensely
enhanced it with code slowly moving back into official Android
Messaging. K9 Mail supports all of the latest IMAP commands which means
you get push notifications and very fast mail.

If I had to guess I would say you are using a self signed of cheap SSL
certificate. I know you are saying you ave SSL off but it would match
the problem perfectly as sendmail would never get a valid command.

Last I checked the inbuilt Android Messaging client doesn't have a way
to manually approve an SSL cert that it can't validate and just silently
fails.

K9 Mail can do this, it's a free app and is probably at least worth
trying as a debugging tool so you know if it's a problem with the
network/phone or the server.
