Managed switches are no slower or faster than a same class unmanaged 
switch... just manageable.

There are three basic levels:
Unmanaged switches: power them up, plug in your stuff and they just work.
Web managed: you can assign an IP and use a browser to do stuff like 
force link speeds for devices that dont auto negotiate well, set a 
monitor/mirror port to be able to use a tool like wireshark to be able 
to diagnose network issues and see whats up.
SNMP Managed: same as above except you can use even more advanced tools 
like Nagios, Cacti, solarwinds, etc to manage and monitor the device.

My .02? stay away from Cisco. Are they good? yes. Stable? Usually. 
Expensive? HELL YES! Ive always had a beef with Cisco. You pay a premium 
for the name but get no warranty out of the box. after 90 days if it 
dies, they've never heard of you. C'mon Cisco, at least give 1 year 
depot service like the other 99% of the vendors. Instead I buy HP. I get 
generally the same quality and performance for 2/3 the cost. AND I get a 
lifetime warranty (on most of their gear). If I need more than free next 
day advanced replacement I can opt to pay for a service contract. Oh and 
its US based support, no nonsense. None of the jump through hoops, fax 
in a PoP, give them a CC#. You call, tell them whats up, and after 
troubleshooting a little and verifying the serial number is valid, you 
get a box the next day with a prepaid return label.
