Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words from everyone.

One thing you'll find with that server, Danny, is that it is likely to
be noisy and throw off a fair amount of BTU's. If you've got a nice
place for it to live that won't bother you (or family members /
roommates / etc) then that will be ideal. Of course, you may well
have all that under control, but I thought I'd mention it so you can be
somewhat forewarned!

That's my helpful advice. Stop reading now if you are short on time.

We had a customer with 3 servers in our facility who decided that to
save some costs during difficult economic times, he would pull the
servers to his house. So he got a small rack, a UPS and upgraded his
broadband connection to a "commercial" account.

What he soon found was that the servers consumed more electricity than
he had considered and actually warmed up his home office to the point
where he had to run his air conditioner more (this is Texas, it gets
quite hot in the summer.) With that and the addition of the broadband
upgrade, he now exceeded his costs of keeping the servers at the
datacenter, and had foregone the backup power, redundant connections,
and facility management. I'm told that would have been acceptable, as
he had grown fond of being able to lay his hands on the equipment
anytime he chose. However, this particular customer has a wife, and she
objected to the constant noise that had been introduced into the house
with the 2x 2U servers, a 1U server and a managed switch. All those
little fans at high RPM's can add up. After 4 months, we heard back
from Jim that he would like to see if his old spot was still available.
