And if I remember correctly it does not install as root. It chowns them to either apache or nobody (I cannt remember). The only reason why that might fail is if you have a quota problem for your vsite. Seriously, the wham method is simple and works, as long as you have your server and vsite setup with some sane settings :)

Nope. :(

Created a new test vsite - suPHP on and site admin changed to owner.
Installed WHAM WP and it has installed with all the ownership set to site admin.
Try to install theme from GUI:

Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2015/06


Change ownership of wp-content to apache and all works.
