Your fix is to

I build the Mysql-python from source RPM.

Download ftp://bo.mirror.garr.it/1/slc/slc60alpha/SRPMS/MySQL-python-1.2.3-0.3.c1.1.el6.src.rpm

rpm -ivh MySQL-python-1.2.3-0.3.c1.1.el6.src.rpm

cd /rpmbuild/SPECS

yum install rpm-build

rpmbuild -ba Mysql-python.spec

cd ../RPMS/x86_64/

yum install MySQL-python-1.2.3-0.3.c1.1.el6.x86_64.rpm

I am lost as I don’t have the directories rpmbuild  etc, and I'm not comfortable it playing  with things I don’t fully understand and then break something

Michael is there another way to resolve the yum update errors on my two servers please or could you provide a more details step by step fix for me as I have two servers now unable to run yum updates.

you also have an additional mysql package ;)
I had the same issue with MySQL-python.

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
** Found 1 pre-existing rpmdb problem(s), 'yum check' output follows:
perl-Sys-Hostname-FQDN-0.11-2.x86_64 is a duplicate with perl-Sys-Hostname-FQDN-0.11-1.i386

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.
