I had a look. Cron was not running on the affected VPS’s. I started it.

Interesting points to note: Cron stopped at a time that was not aligned to any yum update for reasons unknown.

In /var/log/messages…
Jun 5 19:15:05 smallmouth cced(smd)[30305]: client [0:30304] has admin rights
Jun 6 10:30:18 smallmouth cced(smd)[6014]: caught SIGTERM: cleaning up

In /var/log/cron
Jun 5 19:16:01 smallmouth CROND[30313]: (root) CMD (/usr/local/sbin/dfix.sh)
Jun 6 16:47:22 smallmouth crond[32364]: (CRON) STARTUP (1.4.4)

In /var/log/yum.log
Jun 03 06:04:14 Updated: swatch-4.0.0-0BX33.el6.noarch
Jun 05 06:03:18 Updated: perl-handler-utils-1.4.0-0BX14.el6.x86_64

So. It was not caused by yum - cron was working after the yum line below - so no idea why or how… but confusing that it happened to 7 servers simultaneously…
