[BlueOnyx:23620] Bulk DNS Changes

I need to change multiple MX records. I seem to remember being able to modify the zone file directly instead of going through the GUI. Is this still possible? I tried to change one, restarted named but when I looked at the GUI, it hadn't been modified in there. This is on a 5208R and I modified the file in the /var/named/chroot/etc/named/named folder.
