Not sure if you can get root access.
Maybe by the serial port or boot/recorery cd
But look at /etc/pam.d/su
In some systems I have found that this line was hot hashed out and
caused a similar problem. (line 6 on my system)
#auth required pam_wheel.so use_uid

Go into the GUI and go to the Failed Logins under Security.  You will  
find that root is blocked due to too many failed attempts to login.   
Click on "Unblock" and you will be able to log in until someone hacks  
to again.
