Don't worry I fixed it.

I looked at the source code for the yum.php frame and saw that the button
being displayed was dependant on the non-existence of files in /tmp
Accordingly I deleted all yum named files in /tmp and the button came back.

I did a huge 280 package update earlier followed by a reboot and now the
YUM - Updater page
Available Updates tab
has just the white curved base and no contents
There is no list and no Check for Updates button

Any ideas?
