Actually, I have found a way to accomplish what I used to accomplish with
majordomo with mailman now.

1. Setup the mailing list as usual
2. Then I have to turn off explicit destinations:
This is done in the mailman interface under privacy options>recipient
filters.
Must posts have list named in destination (to, cc) field (or be among the
acceptable alias names, specified below)? >>>> No

If you don¹t do this, then you will get requests to moderate with the reason
of

Message has implicit destination

It is because the real list name is 253-iecn but the system sets up an alias
of iecn so that folks don't have to put 253-iecn. The reason behind the
random number is answered here:

3. Turn off moderation for non-members. This is done under privacy
options>sender filters.
Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit action is
defined. >>>> Accept

Once you do that, you should be able to send messages to this address like
you were with majordomo.

After which things are working now.

alias without the prefix is also created. So that's good. Only one thing I am
missing from the old majordomo days:

didn't require the senders to be members of the mailing list. I was able to
create lists like sales at muntada.com and have it expand to multiple folks. It
seems with the mailman, you can't do that even though the BlueOnyx GUI interface
would lead you to believe that could be done. Am I right or wrong about this
conclusion and besides creating an account, assigning it aliases, and do email
forwarding, is there any other option?

A possible work-around for the distribution lists issue - create a user
"sales" for that site. Then turn on mail forwarding and add the addresses
you want mail forwarded to. I've had a BX server forward mail to as many as
five or six addresses. Its something of a PIA having to create another user
- but it works.
