Absolutely correct.  CNAME = EVIL.

Also, another thing that I would avoid is using a box as its own 
resolver.  ie: in the TCP/IP nameserver settings, don't put in 127.0.0.1 
or the box's own IP address.  Use a dedicated (reliable!) resolver. 
Pretty much every ISP provides resolvers for customer use.  We provide 
no fewer than 4 local resolvers for our colocation and dedicated server 
customers, and of course they're free to use any external resolver 
(4.2.2.2, 8.8.8.8, etc) they would like.
